In this episode of Parenting with Truth and Grace we interview Pastor Dustin & Jamie Bates. Dustin and Jamie are fairly new parents with a 2 year old and an 8 week old. Listen as we talk about their fresh experience raising kids.
Dustin and Jamie are originally from the Pacific Northwest, relocating to Allen, Texas 7 years ago. Dustin has served as youth pastor and now as lead pastor of The Harvest Church in Allen. They have been married eight years. Dustin believes the gospel still works today and it’s his vision to see the church released in the love and power of that gospel.
Favorite Verse or Quote – Psalm 112: 1 Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. 2 Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Parenting Failure – The humbling reality that what we planned exactly to happen with our children isn’t exactly what happens. And just when we hit our stride with marriage we had kids and had to start all over again.
Parenting Ah-ha Moment – If you really work at it, your children become who you teach them to be. Spending time to teach Jude after he took a swipe at Jamie.
Proudest Parenting Moment – proudest When a frustrated Jude wanted to take a swipe at Jamie, but because of the time we spent teaching, he instead gently stroked her face.
One thing you are excited about in this season – Seeing our boys develop and love the things they love. And really looking forward to sibling relationships, for the boys to develop into friends.
Lightning round – Greatest fear – scared I wouldn’t like them until they were teenagers – Best advice – don’t lose battles, consistency is key – One of your personal habits that contributes to your success – priority of family time together (the four of us), “Saying no to someone else in order to say yes to us.” – Parenting book – Baby Wise.
One thing they would do differently – We wouldn’t have been quite so rigid with the schedule.
Top 3 Priorities for parenting – 1) Consistency 2) Quality time 3) Community
