Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ~Ephesians 6:1
This week for our Family in 60 Second videos, we took on a topic we get asked about as often as any topic out there. How do raise kids that listen? In our current climate its often considered taboo or oppressive to talk about obedience in our children. But what parent when asking their child to pick up a toy they left laying around, wouldn’t want to hear that child say, “Yes, mom” or “Yes, dad”? Does anyone really want a child to stare back and defiantly scream, “NO!” Of course our great fear is if we are overbearing and authoritarian in our parenting, then we will damage our relationship and in turn harm our child. And yet, Ephesians makes it very clear – children are to obey their parents! God’s not confused and done right this expectation of obedience can actually lead to a stronger and deeper relationship between the child and the parent. This has absolutely been true for us and it can be true for you!
In case you haven’t listened to this week’s Facebook videos (which are actually a little longer than 60 seconds) then we’ve attached the entire conversation as one 12 minute video clip just for you. I hope you’ll check it out. To clarify, at the end of the video, we mention a free webinar which will be happening in a few weeks. David mistakenly gives the webinar the title “Effective Obedience”; he should have said “Effective Disciplining with Truth and Grace.” I guess we had obedience on the brain and just slipped up!
How do you do teaching obedience to your children? On a scale of 1-10, how obedient are your children? On a scale of 1-10 how effective have you been at teaching obedience?
