Day 96-44 Listening when we pray

Earlier I was reading what Jesus said in the bible in the book of Matthew the 6th chapter:

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I thought immediately of ‪#‎TeamJustus‬. Thousands of prayer warriors out there praying for a little boy they don’t know, who is in a family they’ve never met, and doing it with no earthly reward in return… not even a hug or a handshake… most often not even a thank-you! I love what Jesus teaches us here about what’s important to God when it comes to prayer.

First of all, acting like a big shot and praying so everyone can see that you are praying… definitely a no! Make sure your prayer life is characterized as being between God and you. God is not impressed with fancy words or long prayers. But then he goes on and says this, “for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Huh?!?! Really?

We’re right back in that familiar place of asking the ‘why’ questions. After all, if our heavenly Father already knows what I need before I ask then why do I need to ask? More to the point, if He already knows what I need, then why hasn’t He sent it? Great question! Unfortunately the answer lies not in what God knows, but in what we don’t know. Jesus says that God knows what we need, so I’m quite confident of that. What I’m not so sure of is if WE know what we need. But what’s the point of praying, let alone pray in secret, if God already knows?

One of the reasons is simply obedience. God says to pray so we pray! But I believe the other reason we pray, and pray in secret, is so we can hear from God. Like I said, God knows what you need, the question is do you know what you need. I know you know what you think you need… but God truly knows what you need. When we put our trust in God and pray, we open the opportunity for God to speak to us, especially if we do it in secret or in the quiet.

Remember, remember, remember (did I mention to remember) that prayer is communication with God. I don’t know if you’ve ever been stuck sitting next to someone (like on a train or a plane) that couldn’t stop talking and usually about themselves. But it doesn’t take long before you are weary of your “conversation”. Well that’s how God feels when we carry on this one sided conversation with him. I get the real sense that God wants us to stop talking and listen. Of course that brings up the question, but how is God going to answer my question? To which I say, “You let the Creator of the universe worry about that.” Our job is to pray and to earnestly listen. God knows what we need… let God help us know what we need!

And please don’t misunderstand me, we continue to pray. God wants us to bring our requests before the throne of grace… remember it acknowledges a right perspective of God! All I’m saying is, when we pray, we need also to listen.

God has been hearing our prayers for the little ninja. He continues to get better. You can see by the picture that Justus got to enjoy a little chocolate pudding. Today he had an awesome session of trying to wake up his eating senses! Looks like a fun lesson. He also took his parents to a showing of the movie Inside Out. Which incidentally if you haven’t seen you need to go see. Thanks so much for all of your prayers. Please continue to pray. As Jesus said:

Matthew 6:6 … Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

It does my heart good to know that our Father in heaven will one day reward you for praying for our grandson! I’m hoping part of my reward is to one day meet all of you, if not this side of heaven then I pray on the other side. #TeamJustus the moon is round!
