Favorite Verse or Quote – James 1:19-20 “Slow to speak and slow to become angry” Early on in parenting Tony was letting his anger affect and get in the way of his relationships with his wife and kids. Since finding the Lord and hearing this verse, he has strived to live out this verse in his parenting.
Jeremiah 32:27 ” I am the Lord your God. Is anything too hard for me?” There is nothing too hard for the Lord. You have to always keep that in mind when especially when it comes to your marriage and parenting. We have to go to the Lord with everything.
Parenting Failure – The moment when Tony realized he was becoming the hurtful father figure he had grown up with.
Niki on the other hand was so guarded with her children because of how devastated they were when her first marriage fell apart. It caused her to focus on never hurting her kids rather than focusing on how God wanted her to parent.
Parenting Ah-ha Moment – Thinking that once kids turned eighteen they were done parenting. Realizing soon after all her kids started becoming adults that it doesn’t stop there. God has more work to do on parents and on kids. Parenting goes way beyond eighteen.
Proudest Parenting Moment – You always pray for your kids to come to know the Lord and to have a heart to serve him. Tony knew he was doing something right when he got to baptize his own kids.
One thing you are excited about in this season – All their kids are growing up and entering a season of life that is very fun. To see them all have a heart for the Lord and to serve him in their own ways.
Lightning round –
- Greatest fear – Failing, becoming the parent that I despised growing up.
- Best advice – To capture their hearts.
- One of your personal habits that contributes to your success – Through the stress and challenges of a blended family, learning to just keep going. Also Niki had made it a habit to use scripture prayers.
- Parenting website – Jodi Durr at Meaningful Mama, a great resource to weave faith and raising little kids.
One thing they would do differently- To follow the Lord from the very beginning. Also to have had more conversations together about parenting. Because they both came into the marriage with kids, they also came in with particular ways of parenting. Because they didn’t talk about it, they weren’t always on the same page.
Top Priorities for parenting –
- You have to have a relationship with Jesus, and he has to be the center of everything.
